LEE SMITH graduated from Hollins College with a degree in English in
1967. She was a professor of English at North Carolina State University
from 1989 until her retirement in 2000. She is the author of 10 novels
and three collections of short stories. She has received numerous
awards and honors, including the Academy Award in Fiction from American
Academy of Arts & Letters, 1999; Lila Wallace/Readers Digest Award, 1995
- 1997; Robert Penn Warren Prize for Fiction, 1991.
