Roald Hoffmann
ROALD HOFFMANN was born in 1937 in Zloczow, Poland. Dr. Hoffmann came
to the United States in 1949 and studied at Columbia and Harvard (Ph.D.,
1962). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. In
addition to his many scientific endeavors and honors, Dr. Hoffmann is an
essayist and poet. His poetry collections include "The Metamict State"
(1987) and "Gaps and Verges" (1990), both published by the University
Presses of Florida.
In 1993 Hoffmann published "Chemistry Imagined", an
art/science/literature collaboration with artist Vivian Torrence in an
attempt to reveal the creative and humanistic sparks of molecular
science. In 1995, in "The Same and Not the Same", he presented an
account of the dualities that lie under the surface of chemistry. In
1997, Dr. Hoffmann collaborated with Shira Leibowitz Schmidt on "Old
Wine, New Flasks: Reflections on Science and Jewish Tradition", a book
of the intertwined voices of science and religion. Dr. Hoffmann also
appears on PBS delivering his television course, "The World of
Chemistry". Since 1965 he has been at Cornell, where he is the Frank H.
T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters.
