Kate Wheeler was born Oklahoma in 1955 and grew up in several countries
in South America. She also trained as a Buddhist nun in Burma. Her
first novel, When Mountains Walked, is a story of foreigners adrift in
exotic cultures, of marriages threatened by one partner's passion for a
cause and of political movements that pit an underclass against corrupt
governments and corporations. Her debut short story collection, Not
Where I Started From, consists of ten stories of Americans in exotic cultures, seeking love or
spiritual enlightenment. Her work has appeared in many notable journals
and collections, including Best American Short Stories 1992. Wheeler
has been a PEN/Faulkner runner-up and has also been the recipient of the
Pushcart Prize and two O. Henry Awards. She currently lives in
Massachusetts.
